Final Fantasy XIV Housing Market Has Serious Issues

Final Fantasy XIV Housing Market Has Serious Issues

Ever since it has been a thing, the home-owning aspect of Final Fantasy XIV has been a strange source of interesting emergent storytelling. From enormous virtual brothels to in-game inequality issues, the expensive and limited housing space has been super fascinating. But now it appears to be dealing with a bug, and one that is causing both issues for digital homeowners and is driving a wedge between players and support staff.

In a Reddit thread, there appears to be a growing concern over what is essentially an abandonment mechanic. The mechanic has undergone, ostensibly, some quiet changes, and those changes have been exacerbated by a bug. Originally, if you didn’t enter your home for a period of 45 days, your home would be considered abandoned, and that slot would open back up on the market. Apparently, that 45-day limit was quietly shortened to 30 days. But that’s not the big issue.

The big issue is that the system used to send email alerts to players approaching that limit, reminding them to at least check back in so they can continue to own their extremely expensive and high-demand property. A bug appears to be causing that notification not to go out, so people are checking into their Final Fantasy XIV game only to discover their home quietly vanished. To make matters worse, while support is responding my acknowledging the bug is a known issue, they appear to be refusing to restore ownership to lost homes.

It will be interesting, once again, to see how this Final Fantasy XIV matter plays out, and how it affects the game’s economy going forward.

Maplestory 2 Launch Date To Be Announced At Premiere Event

Maplestory 2 Launch Date To Be Announced At Premiere Event

MapleStory 2‘s Closed Beta event has come and gone, and according to the most recent Producer Blog, the dev team is hard at work going over the feedback they’ve received. Of course, with the beta over, fans are now wanting the answer to a very important question: When is the game going to launch?

Unfortunately, the blog doesn’t actually tell us that. Instead, what we’re getting is an announcement of an announcement. That’s right, we’re not going to find out a launch date today. We have a little bit longer to wait. It seems the dev team wants to hold that bit of information for the MapleStory 2 Premiere Event that will be taking place in Los Angeles on August 21.

There is some good news here. Since this is an event we’re talking about, players can also look forward to getting other information — like a look at what the future content schedule will be like. The event will be open to press, media, and selected content creators who participated in the Closed Beta events. Fans can get details on everything that happens there via the MapleStory 2 social accounts.

Is Fortnite Quietly Hurting Video Games?

Is Fortnite Quietly Hurting Video Games?

A SuperData July 2018 report said some interesting stuff about Fortnite. Essentially, as the report spread through the usual spaces, the question of whether or not Fortnite was “cannibalizing” game was being raised. But despite that, companies such as EA are saying that Fortnite is actually good for games. So which is it? Is Fortnite, with its uncanny ability to generate billions of dollars, sucking up all the video game money and hurting the industry? Or is it pulling everyone else up with it?

Let’s go over the SuperData report first. Obviously, Fortnite is a huge success. The game has made over $1 billion in revenue in a year’s time. That’s wild. Fortnite has made so much money that its developer, Epic Games, is reinvesting $100 million into kickstarting an esports scene for the game. The company is also adjusting its asset marketplace for Unreal Engine 4 to give developers a bigger cut. They’re just giving every money away, relative to the usual split in similar marketplaces, because the company doesn’t need any more money at this point.

Now, let’s take a look at the numbers. For the second quarter of 2017. Fortnite streaming went up by 60% compared to the previous quarter. Meanwhile, games such as League of Legends, Overwatch, and Counter Strike: GO fell. The first two fell around 15-20%, while CS: GO dropped just over 50%. Now, that looks pretty bad, but SuperData noted in the report that these numbers do depend on events like tournaments, so some of the drops could be coincidental despite the overlap in audience. However, there’s another piece of data that’s a bit more alarming.

Going to quarter two for 2018, SuperData says that total digital console sales for Sony and Microsoft jumped 49% year-over-year. Quarterly sales reportedly went up 7% compared to the previous year. Seems good, right? SuperData suggests that if Fortnite is removed from the equation here, the sales actually go 6% in the opposite direction, compared to last year. That’s a pretty big difference. So the question there is if Fortnite didn’t exist, would those disparate percentages be closer together or would that 6% decline be the active number?

It’s earnings call season, and several big, AAA companies were asked about this. EA’s Andrew Wilson states that Fortnite is a net good for the industry, suggesting that the game has expanded the overall audience for video games. People, especially younger people who were not into games before Fortnite, are now interested in other games, which Wilson believes will turn into good holiday season numbers. However, he also said that Fortnite has also impacted EA game movement because there are only so many hours people have for games. Activision Blizzard had an interesting take on the matter, suggesting that its players always come back for the tentpole franchise releases.

SuperData isn’t quite buying either. While EA is hoping for long-term gains from Fortnite, and Activision Blizzard looks to its usual slate of big releases to fill in the interim gaps, SuperData’s glass is half-empty. SuperData suggests that while new players have emerged and entered gaming because of Fortnite, they’re just playing Fortnite. And so are other people who used to play other games. The company refers to the gaming market as a “zero-sum” situation, and that once the Fortnite growth settles down, we’re going to see overall losses from other companies funneled into the people who stick around with Fortnite long-term. Essentially, the fad will eventually calm down, but Fortnite won’t disappear, will still be huge, and will still be a time sink that takes over what would otherwise be sales for your Call of Duty and Battlefield releases.

Video games are always changing, and there’s always something new and big waiting to happen and disrupt all the old, long-running franchises. Call of Duty can’t stay on top forever, and it won’t. In its time, the likes of Minecraft and Fortnite happened, among other things. The reality of the situation is that Fortnite is more than just a fad and that it’s going to be sticking around for a long time, even when some chunks of the audience move on to other things. And live service games are not going to be the long-term answer for dwindling profits they were implied to be, for reasons EA’s Andrew Wilson gave above. There are too many games that demand too much time now, and gamers are out of time. People are settling into their one, maybe two live games, and not touching others. Is this a problem, or a good opportunity for the industry to correct in a new direction? We’ll find out soon enough.

Final Fantasy XIV’s Companion App Goes Live

Final Fantasy XIV’s Companion App Goes Live

For Final Fantasy XIV players, one of the biggest bugbears to wrangle with is managing their inventories. Hopefully, that is getting a little bit easier or at least more manageable thanks to the FFXIV Companion App release today.

As mentioned before when the app was first announced, the companion app will let players access and handle their character inventory with features to let them sell or discard items. Players can also chat with their friends, Free Company or Linkshells. The app will also let players access the Market Board auction house features, selling or buying items after spending a Kupo Nut item. These Kupo Nuts are earned once each day you log in to the app.

On the subject of Kupo Nuts, there is some monetization associated with the app. While most of the app’s features have no cost, free users can only carry a maximum of two Kupo Nuts a day. A Premium Service Plan is set to be offered which will increase this limit to 10 Kupo Nuts along with other benefits such as an additional Kupo Nut earned each day, management of Chocobo and retainer inventories, and an extra retainer slot and Chocobo saddlebag. The monthly service will cost $5 but is not yet live.

More details about the app, including a link to an FAQ, are found here and a video showing the app’s features in action is below.

Our Thoughts

Hmmm….we’re not so sure about the restrictions being imposed on free users, particularly since a great many of the app’s users will very likely be looking to access their complete inventories through it. How do you feel about these restrictions? Are you going to be using it yourself? Let us know below.

Fortnite’s 5.21 Patch Adds a Heavy Sniper and New 50v50 Mode

Fortnite’s 5.21 Patch Adds a Heavy Sniper and New 50v50 Mode

The 5.21 patch went live in Fortnite earlier today, adding new weapons, modes, and challenges to Battle Royale and Save the World.

Battle Royale received the new heavy sniper weapon, an epic/legendary sniper that sacrifices reload time for a powerful shot and less bullet drop compared to others. One shot can deal 150/157 damage to players and 1050/1100 to buildings. Players have already found it useful to quickly expose enemies before switching to another weapon to shoot them. The Sniper Shootout limited-time mode returns from last June, adding the new sniper rifle and removing scoped assault rifles.

The 50v50 limited-time mode also received a few changes. Now called Soaring 50’s, the mode places a bigger emphasis on mobility while keeping the same rules of two teams of 50 fighting to win. A new feature is the ability to redeploy the glider by pressing the jump button when more than 10 meters in mid-air. Impulse grenades, bounce pads, and launcher pads have been increased in the loot pool as well.

The cooperative Save the World mode added a new weekly Horde Challenge in the 5.21 update, rewarding 1500 Gold for completing the first time and 75 Tickets after that. The mission involves defeating bulletproof enemies that can only be defeated by melee weapons, traps, and hero abilities. Fortnite’s Save the World will add a new hero to the Event Store this Wednesday, and the mode also received a few bug fixes. Check out the rest of the details in the official patch notes.

Reviews of Maplestory M: Old-school, Memorable, Trash As Hell

Reviews of Maplestory M: Old-school, Memorable, Trash As Hell

"This is probably my most played video game. Dunno just how many hours because other clients didn't count them. It's fun to put some YouTube videos on the second monitor and start grinding.

First of all the game is really old and you can see it. Some places have graphics straight from decade ago, but then there are the new "blockbusters" that try hard to make the game feel like a modern piece of art.

Along with ancient graphics it has also got tons of bugs. Like think of fooling around in GMOD sandbox but it's actually a 2D MMO amount of bugs. Mostly it's just harmless glitching and unresponsiveness but sometimes you get yourself stuck so bad a GM needs to teleport you out. And then there are cases when even the GMs are helpless.

Character creation is pretty straightforward and there isn't really any room for builds and stuff. You are DPS. Now get the same gear pretty much everyone else got and throw some cosmetics on top of it to feel special. Speaking of cosmetics there's a lot to choose from.

Also, you don't need to spend a single penny in this game for "pay to win items" if you attend the events. And at the end who are you fighting against anyway? There's no PvP expect from minigame events and your gear or skills have zero effect there.

Also please do have fun with other players. Everybody's friendly and there are no traces of toxicity anywhere.

So, in the end, it's just a fun PvE MMO with cute characters."

"This game used to be an amazing MMO to play along with real-life friends and newly-met friends alike! However, the game's level of immersion has sharply declined from what I used to enjoy. While the Pay-to-Win factor surely has played a huge part in my shift of attitude toward the game, the social, free-spirited nature of the player base seems to have evaporated more and more over time, with the exception of guild and alliance members to speak with. It's much more difficult to establish genuine friendships than it used to be, in my opinion.

Would love to give this game a good rating, but I'd be crazy to recommend this game to anyone else since I've quit, and I infrequently log in just for rewards nowadays."

Fortnite Nintendo Switch vs Android (Samsung S9) Shows Us a Clear Winner

Fortnite Nintendo Switch vs Android (Samsung S9) Shows Us a Clear Winner

Like it or not, the Nintendo Switch isn’t the most powerful console out right now. And if you’re buying one for the graphics and technical prowess, then you’re in for a rude awakening. That said, Nintendo’s latest console isn’t a slouch, either — regardless of what many people think.

Over on YouTube, content producer TiLMENDOMiNATiON whipped up a short Fortnite Switch vs mobile video, showcasing the Nintendo Switch (in portable mode) against a Samsung S9. Just a few seconds in, it’s plainly obvious the Nintendo Switch version is leagues better, which shouldn’t be that surprising, no?

Not only are the Switch version’s colours better, the resolution is a whole lot better as well. Draw distance and the amount of items on screen at any given time are also tilted to the Switch’s favour, too.

Hopefully, this puts a stop to all the “hur dur the Nintendo Switch is weaker than a mob1le phone!111” statements. You can check out the latest Fortnite Battle Royale patch and its list of changes here.

Are you surprised at the results? Have you seen a mobile version of a game that looks better than its console counterpart?

Monster Hunter World removed from WeGame after numerous complaints, drops to Mixed reviews on Steam

Monster Hunter World removed from WeGame after numerous complaints, drops to Mixed reviews on Steam

It appears that Monster Hunter World, while a commercial success for Capcom on the PC, has really damaged the company’s image, something that may affect its newer titles. After receiving numerous complaints from fans and at the request of the authorities, Tencent has permanently removed the game from WeGame.

WeGame stated that Monster Hunter World did “not fully comply with relevant regulatory and policy requirements”. Do note though that this may be irrelevant to the real issues of the game. As Radiichinapointed out, the gaming market in China has been grappling with issues related to the authorities’ “clean up” operation targeting apparently “inappropriate” content. As such, Monster Hunter World may have been flagged for inappropriate content and that could be the reason for its removal.

Right now, Capcom’s monster hunting title suffers from major server issues. Not only that but as we’ve already reported, the PC version is not that well optimized (considering the previous Capcom games). It’s also worth noting that contrary to other titles, this time Capcom refused to send us a review code (I don’t think we’re blacklisted and my gut says that Capcom already knew that Monster Hunter World PC had issues that were not fixed at launch).

Furthermore, and while the game has broken three records on Steam already, it now has Mixed reviews on Valve’s distribution service (meaning that it has fallen lower than 50%). Most Steam users cite the game’s performance and server issues for their negative scores.

Let’s also not forget the fact that Capcom claimed back in January 2018 that it would delay the PC version in order to offer a ‘really great optimized PC experience.’ Well… apparently, that wasn’t the case!

Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire 2018 Guide – How to Get Your Fancy Bikini

Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire 2018 Guide – How to Get Your Fancy Bikini

The Final Fantasy XIV Moonfire Faire event has begun, bringing the heat of summer to Square Enix’s successful MMORPG.

Yet, this year the quest to grab your much-anticipated summer wear is a quite a bit different from previous episodes. Remember that nasty (or awesome, depending on the point of view) platforming challenge around the tower in Kugane? Get ready for some more of that.

Keep in mind that to be able to partake in the event you’ll need to be level 30. It’s very easy to get there, so you shouldn’t have trouble. As long as you match that requirement, there is no fighting involved, so your actual level does not matter.

First of all, head to Limsa Liminsa’s Upper Decks, and grab the quest “Jump to the Beach” from Moyaru Moyaru. Yes, the title of the quest is quite foreboding.

The next quest to do will be nearby. Go to the gold-dressed elsen named Beaudefoin and take the repeatable quest “Eorzean Nimble Warrior.”

Now it’s time for the platforming challenge. Use the water sprouts to get propelled on top of the contraption. There are three challenges of increasing difficulty, and you’ll need to talk to an NPC after each. Don’t miss them, because if you jump down before talking to them, you’ll have to start over.

You can find out a video of the whole thing below, showing you how to do it.

The first challenge is elementary. Just jump from platform to platform to reach the end. It’s really hard to get wrong.

The second challenge requires a bit more precision: if you have trouble with overshooting, using the Walk toggle on the narrow platforms can save you from the issue of running off the edge due to being too eager.

The third challenge is the annoying one, at least if you’re not good at platforming. A good trick to use here is to jump at an angle so that the end of each jump will push against the wall at the back, preventing you from overshooting.

At the top, you can talk with P’obiano and complete the challenge. You will receive ten Pinwheel and ten Bombard Bloom fireworks. You can repeat this quest as many times as you want if you’d like more fireworks for free.

At the backside of the platform the platforming challenge continues, but reaching the very top (at least from what we know at the moment of this writing) is just for bragging rights and to get a nice view.

Once you’re done, go back to Harmaga to continue the story.

Look for your new Mi’qote friend nearby, and watch him attempt the challenge himself.

Go find him after watching the cutscene. Do keep in mind that, as usual, you can select any dialogue choice. It does not matter if you’re sympathetic or cynical.

Now it’s time to swim back to the beach in order to find his little sister. Use the Splash emote on her when prompted.

Lastly, go back to Harmaga to receive your “Endless Summer” outfit with top, bottom, slippers, and shades. It’ll be a offered item that you need to activate in your inventory to receive the set.

Here’s a little trick: If you use the Visor command in the emote menu, you can lift your shades on your head.

If you want the Mosquito Moogle and Curry Plate furniture items, you can buy them from 5,000 gil each at the Moonfire FaireFire Vendor on the other side of the gazebo. She will also sell you all kinds of fireworks. They’re super-cheap, so repeating the challenge to get them for free is probably not really worth it.

And that’s it: you have completed the Moonfire Faire for this year, hopefully without excessive frustration due to the platforming challenge.

If you want to learn more about Final Fantasy XIV, you can also enjoy the trailer for the latest major update, our recent interview with Main Scenario Lead Writer Natsuko Ishikawa and Localization Lead John Crow, and our review of the Stormblood expansion.

Battle for Azeroth Launch Day - Simple Things to Prepare

Battle for Azeroth Launch Day - Simple Things to Prepare

It’s time to return to World of Warcraft today beginning at 3:00 pm Pacific / 6:00 pm Eastern (you can check your start time here) with the simultaneous worldwide launch of the Battle for Azeroth. Players and their respective factions will be beating the drums of war, but the wily player will take care of a few things before heading out to battle. Here’s what we recommend.

Clean Out Your Bank, Crafting Panel & Inventory

Even though it’s late summer, it’s time for spring cleaning. Take a look at your bags and your bank slots. It’s probable that they’re packed to the gills with legendaries, crafting resources, and miscellaneous notions picked up during the last two years of Legion. We all save like packrats “just in case” amirite? Well no more! The battle for Azeroth will bring new crafting reagents, new toys to collect, new gear to keep for those occasions when you’re using an off spec and so on and so forth. So get out that Magic Broom and get busy, soldier. There’s no time to waste. Give your inventory and bank a good scrubbing to free up all of those soon-to-be-filled slots!

And in case you’re still hesitating, particularly with crafting materials, literally everything in Legion costs in the silvers on the Auction House. No need to save them anymore. You’ll be able to purchase them if or when you decide to craft “legacy” items once BFA is getting long in the tooth.

Oh...and trash the Legendaries too. All of them that had so many possibilities for gameplay will have all effects disabled at level 116 and are for the most part simply stat sticks. If you have any items that grant movement speed (Sephuz, the crafted legendary boots, Aggramar’s Stride, etc.) they are worth using in the early days. The rest? Unless you’re sentimentally attached to them, give ‘em the heave-ho.

Abandon All Incomplete Quests from Legion

While you’re in cleaning mode, dump those old unfinished quests from Legion (and before) except for those that may progress an Order Hall campaign or lead to an achievement / mount, etc. There’s simply no reason to keep them in your log since it has a limited capacity for the number of active quests you’re allowed. As with every new expansion, there will be a ton of new quests and your log will fill up very, very fast. So save yourself the hassle of trying to figure out which ones you can safely abandon on the fly and do it now before the expansion launches later today.

Log In on Alts to Start Accruing Rested XP

With ten new levels, you’ll definitely want to log ALL of your characters before you go adventuring on your main. You’ll want to make sure they’re in a place that accrues Rested XP so that when you’re ready to trot them out for their turn at adventure, they’re ready to go with the "rested" bonus to experience gained through any WoW activity.

Consider Changing Professions to Gathering

With a new expansion comes the need for new materials and reagents for crafters. The start of the new content is the perfect time to change your characters to gathering professions -- one if you’d just as soon hold on to an actual crafting profession. Mining and Herbalism both offer a great way to earn gold by selling the ore and / or plants on the Auction House and they both give pretty decent experience just for mining or picking a flower. It’s a win-win scenario -- earn bonus (and easy) experience and simultaneously earn a tidy profit in gold. You can always change professions later on when the market for crafting materials slides.

Enable War Mode for the XP Bonus BUT FIRST…

One of the best things you can do for yourself during the first few days of Battle for Azeroth is to enable War Mode. Rest easy, confirmed PvEers -- doing so doesn’t mean you’re going to be out stalking the enemy, though you can, of course. War Mode provides players with a 10% boost to XP as well as access to PvP talents (the Gladiator Medallion + three others you can choose).

The first few days, players will be questing and levelling on their own faction’s island and it is unlikely that enemy players will be present so being in War Mode will not be as “dangerous” as it will be later.

HOWEVER: There is one thing to do before you enable War Mode -- go retrieve your Heart of Azeroth necklace from Magni. Here’s why according to Redditor SoulSoBreezy:

One of the first things you'll do in BFA is head down to Silithus, a contested zone, to speak with Magni for a turn in, then take a teleport pad down to where you obtain the Heart.

In the meantime, the area around Magni is considered no fly, and no sanctuary component is in place. Adding to that is the fact that clicking on the teleport pad has a cast time that can be interrupted.

So, either turn War Mode off before fetching the Heart (don't forget to turn it back on because you WILL return to your capital!), or have fun AOEing the teleport pad and Magni!

Once you have your necklace, all are good to go.

Update Your Add-ons

One of the final things you’ll want to do is update all of your add-ons. With backend changes to World of Warcraft, most, if not all, add-ons have been changed as well. In addition, many add-ons have expansion-specific things to track, so you’ll definitely want to get the latest version.

The quickest way to do so is to get the Twitch desktop client and set the default start page to Curse Add-ons and then it’s a simple one-button push to “update all”. There are a few that aren’t on Curse, but not many (I’m looking at you, ElvUI!).

Then It’s Off to War, Soldier

You can learn a lot more about what you’ll be experiencing, about the new features and systems by visiting WoWHead and by checking out Taliesin & Evietls video below. Both will give you plenty of ideas about where to start and how to make the best use of your time.

FOR THE ALLIANCE!
FOR THE HORDE!
FOR SMOOTHER LEVELING!

PS For those who will be trying to hit max level before dawn and a new workday arrives, be sure to check these handy tips for doing so responsibly:

  • sleep and rest - even a power nap will help
  • stay hydrated - energy drinks won't cut it
  • eat non-sugary food
  • listen to some music to stay focused
