‘Fortnite’ Season 5, Week 10 Challenges Guide

‘Fortnite’ Season 5, Week 10 Challenges Guide

Weekly challenges are available for anyone who purchases the Season 5 Battle Pass, which can be had for 950 in-game “V-Bucks,” or roughly $10. Thanks to the limited-time High Stakes event, there are also three bonus challenges at the moment; they’ll need to be completed while playing the High Stakes mode.

Here’s what you have to do this week:

  • Search jigsaw puzzle pieces in basements (7)
  • Consume apples or mushrooms (20)
  • Eliminate opponents (Hard; 10)
  • Search chests in Salty Springs (7)
  • Deal damage to opponents (5,000 damage)
  • Search between a covered bridge, waterfall, and the ninth green (Hard; 1)
  • Stage 1 of 3: Eliminate an opponent in Pleasant Park (Hard; 1)
  • Play matches of the Getaway (High Stakes; 10)
  • Deal damage to jewel-carrying opponents (High Stakes; 500 damage)
  • Pick up a jewel in different matches of the Getaway (High Stakes; 5)

To find the hidden items, head to the spots marked on this handy all-in-one cheat sheet by Reddit user “thesquatingdog”; there’s no need to waste time looking for landmarks or in-game treasure maps. The cheat sheet also pinpoints key named locations, like Salty Springs and Pleasant Park, and highlights the various spawn points for the apples, mushrooms, and jigsaw pieces you’ll have to track down. As always, remember to finish out the match you’re in once you’ve completed one or more challenges in order to be sure you get credit for them.

Hard challenges will award players 10 Battle Stars; the rest will usually award five. Complete any four of these tasks to unlock the weekly featured Battle Pass reward. Finish all of them to earn as many Battle Stars as possible — which will give you maximum value, in terms of loot, for your Battle Pass.

'Fortnite: Battle Royale' Loading Screens: There's No Hidden Week 10 Banner Or Battle Star

'Fortnite: Battle Royale' Loading Screens: There's No Hidden Week 10 Banner Or Battle Star

Starting in Season 4, Fortnite: Battle Royale started hiding secrets in its loading screens. Every week you got a new, unlockable loading screens for completing every challenge, and together they told a sort of loose narrative of what was happening in the season--in the case of Season 5, very loose. That wasn't all, however. Each loading screen also served as a sort of map to a hidden battle star that you could use to level up your battle pass. Or seven of them, at least. In Season 5, the week 8 and 9 loading screens started dispensing hidden banners instead of stars, giving us a slightly less valuable target, but that matters little for the Fortnite player that just wants to get all the stuff they can.

This week, however, there's no star, and there's no banner. It's possible there's some other sort of secret, but we don't know what it is yet. Someone might find something yet, and we'll keep you updated if they do.

This offers a little insight into the mysterious purple cube that's been travelling all over the map, albeit only a very small amount of insight. From what we can tell, the cube is either evil itself, or some sort of portal into an evil version of Fortnite. What that means for gameplay is anyone's guess: all we know about the cube so far is that it came from the sky, it creates low-gravity fields at areas where it burns glyphs into the grounds, and it will roast you if you try to shoot at it. That's all well and good for match-to-match fighting, but it clearly has something to do with the broader arc of the season as well. Just what that is remains a bit of a mystery.

There's just one week left in Fortnite's Season 5, and there's likely some more big action on the way. Season 6 is bound to start with some big changes to the map, and whatever they are they're bound to have something to do with this mysterious cube, whether it's going to level Loot Lake or transport the whole world into an alternate dimension. It's really anyone's guess at this point, but we're bound to start getting some more clues soon. Stay tuned.

Fortnite Fans Concerned as Hurricane Florence Heads Straight for Epic Games HQ

Fortnite Fans Concerned as Hurricane Florence Heads Straight for Epic Games HQ

As Fortnite continues to take the gaming world with a ferocity worthy of a Battle Royale title, the folks over at Epic Games are bracing for a different kind of storm.

As many know, Hurricane Florence is flirting along the edges of the United States at terrifying speeds. The impact on the East Coast is sending families scurrying as they get to safety and prepare their homes against the onslaught of the growing storm.

With the Fortnite studio being directly in the hurricane's path and the game having such a record-breaking player base, it's only natural that so many would offer their well-wishes and thoughts of safety to the company and its team of developers. Of course, we wouldn't be gamers without a few good-natured jokes and with all the insanity surrounding the "Fortnite Cube" and season 5's impending closure, many joked that this was all a ruse to kick off season 6.

Obviously the jokes are made in jest and are not meant to take a scary situation lightly. Overall, the thoughts offered to the studio have been supportive in hopes for the safety of all in the hurricane's trajectory.

Epic Games is by far not the only one in the path and we are hoping for everyone's safety until the worst is over. You can track more about the storm's path and more here on Twitter as well as your local news station.

Fortnite’s Newest Switch Update Blocks Video Capture Feature

Fortnite’s Newest Switch Update Blocks Video Capture Feature

Fortnite has been having some performance issues on the Nintendo Switch. Epic Games promised that they are looking into them, and that they hope to resolve them with the next major update for the game that they release. True to their word, they did release a new update aimed at fixing the performance problems with the Switch version of the game.

One of the ways the game does that, apparently, is by blocking the Switch’s video recording functionality. The functionality works on a whitelist basis (in that games need to explicitly allow it, and it is not available by default), and is known to have some performance costs; presumably, Epic feels that disabling it leads to major gains in the game’s performance, or they wouldn’t have gone to the effort of blocking it.

It is unknown whether or not the change is permanent, and Epic themselves haven’t actually officially acknowledged it at all. Fortnite is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Editorial: Why are so many People Upset over Fortnite’s Success?

Editorial: Why are so many People Upset over Fortnite’s Success?

Each generation of gaming brings forth a title that becomes far more popular than anything else and spawns a franchise of devoted fans an incredible success. We’ve seen the rise of so many franchises to do so such as Pokémon, Grand Theft Auto, and Overwatch are just to name a few that capture the world by storm and become beloved by millions around the globe. The most recent of these massive success stories comes is none-other than the free-to-play shooter in Fortnite, which has been a global phenomenon since launch. Just like every title before it, it is has garnered a large fan following, an abundance of riches and a whole lot of hate towards the series.

Wherever you go now, you are most likely going to see something related to Epic Games’ Fortnite. Whether it be from apparel, news reports and everything else between, this free-to-play game has captured the imagination of millions around the globe. The battle royale genre has exploded in the last few years and has brought in so many players, from competitors to new gamers to enjoy this quirky, yet calculated title under a variety of different platforms that range from playing at home in your living room, or on the go with a cell phone. This strategy complied with the free-to-play aspect are the reasons behind Fortnite‘s success as no matter what device you have or how you want to go about it, there is always a way to play.

The game has grown far beyond than just a simple video game as different media outlets have both signed its praises as an amazing title for friends to enjoy in a cooperative setting to suggesting that it has had a negative influence on many. While it is easy to see as to why people may think such a way as there have been extreme cases where people have shown sign of aggression as well as shown these negative influences, these remain few and far in-between takes that have magnified under to scope of the success of this title. Many will point out that the younger demographic of gamers who play Fortnite is the most susceptible and there is truth behind that thinking, but it isn’t everybody and pointing at one wrongdoing or any bad behaviour shouldn’t be considered a majority in any argument.

This is reminiscent of the times of when Pokémon (Red/Blue Versions) came out and the entire world was focused on this pocket-sized phenomenon. Many children (myself included) were glued to these titles and purchasing merchandise, toys, clothing, cards on a game that nobody knew how to play and everything else in-between to the point where many were scrutinizing the pocket monster franchise. Outlandish claims from religious groups suggesting that the game was introducing and converting children about the creation of evolution and that Pokémon was a sinful product, to parent groups stating that they lost their child to these games and even now, there are some who wish to blame these entries for their kid’s bad behavior or faltering grades.

Once again, some of these points have some validation behind them, but much like everything else in life, we have to be taught and have an understanding of what it means to have limits. This isn’t an attack on any parent or guardians regarding their parenting skills, far from it, but to point out that these titles bring the worst in their children and or they are a by-product of sinful propaganda is a bit of an extreme and I will be the first to agree that there should be certain restrictions in regards to what and how a younger audience goes out and plays these highly acclaimed titles like the Pokémon’s and the Fortnite’s of the world, but moderation and education go hand in hand and finding a proper balance is the foundations of what we should be looking for.

The topic of the violence in Fortnite has also been a heated topic as of late and once again, focusing on the impact and how it affects a younger audience. Now once again, I stand by that theory, to a certain degree as I’ve already spoken out in regards to this topic in the past and how it isn’t just one company, one parent or one child’s problem, but lies with each individual and each name to do something about it. Unlike the Call of Duty’s and the Grand Theft Auto’s of the world, Fortnite at least is far more cartoonish in nature and offers a far more likeable approach compared to these more mature entries, however it is still people shooting guns at one another and no matter how much you want to colour it up, it will always be an issue no matter in which way you look at it.

The way I see it is that Fortnite is a title rated T for teen or 12 years + depending on the region and that seems to be the age range that many people will view it as a proper categorization for this free-to-play game. The violence, once again, cartoonish at nature and tamed just like many games that fall under this category. Now take a title such as Destiny 2 or even Uncharted 4which also fall under this category that has far more violent acts, blood, and have far more “realistic” gunfights are to be sold in the same bracket of games that Fortnite is in. This is where I am opposed to the rating system because it is far too spread out and inconsistent as to where one game may be scrutinized, for one thing, such as violence, the other may get a pass, especially if that game isn’t a world phenomenon, much like how Fortnite has become.

Quickly moving over these matters to something far more petty is how people go out of their way to say anything negative to try and make games such as these a terrible experience. There’s nothing that bothers me more than somebody, no matter is when people make it their missions to spew negative ideas or say horrible things just for the sake of a reaction. I do know that it seems amplified when it comes to gaming, but it is everywhere and it is just painful to see or watch when someone just wants to put anything and anyone down for their hard work. It is a shame too that we see so much of it floating on the internet or in our daily lives as nobody deserves to have their work looked down upon because one person or group says its bad. I’m sure the negative feedback really doesn’t bother Epic Games in any sense of the matter, but saying that to an individual may be far more harmful than just saying that this isn’t something for me and move on.

The real sad part of it all is that there are so many stories, far too many to list that have occurred over the years in the gaming industry that it really gives a bad public image for all gamers. Gaming is such a special community and a terrific one at that, but just like everything else in life, there are those who wish to ruin the fun for everybody and that goes for games such as Fortnitethat the popularity has grown exponentially. This isn’t just in regards to those who want to bash the game, but also play it and either scream at their televisions or harass other gamers for their play through the means of cyberbullying and personal attacks.

There’s no denying that this has been an ongoing issue for online community focused experiences and there hasn’t been much of a response for this over the years with the best solution being to not play the game, but that completely defers to what these experiences are all about. Games such as Fortnite promote great cooperative play, community and support for one another and when this works, it works very well, but when it doesn’t it really becomes a mess and more often than not, it gets flack for it. There is no easy fix for this and having Epic Games or any other video game company to police their online communities would be ridiculous and far too difficult without compromising exactly what these titles focus on.

Has any of this slowed down Fortnite in any sort of way? Absolutely not and it won’t ever. The main reason behind this game’s success is to be able to look past that mess of things and not let it carry over into its experience. There are times where it becomes absolutely frustrating to see the response of people regarding a win or a loss or even a simple mistake, but like every other game before it, it is just a game. and should be viewed as such. It’s possible that Fortnite even bettered itself for this by not responding to any “controversies” or “issues” it may have since its launch and really makes it the #1 game to play this generation, even with all of the hate, just like every other massively successful entry before it.

Many have voiced their displeasures towards Fortnite for a variety of reasons and while some arguments can be made to justify these points, most of them are simply white noise that the franchise doesn’t deserve. The constant badgering and negativity surrounding this massive hit won’t stop Epic Games from continuing their support for Fortnite and the game will only continue to grow for the years to come. While many will try to put it down as a cheap gimmick title or one that is bad for gaming, there’s no denying what Fortnite has been able to achieve as one of this generation most popular entry’s and nothing can take it away from that.

Fortnite Battle Royale: Kirstie Allsopp's iPad Smashing Puts Child Gaming Addiction Under The Microscope

Fortnite Battle Royale: Kirstie Allsopp's iPad Smashing Puts Child Gaming Addiction Under The Microscope

Three months after a 9-year-old girl was reportedly sent to therapy for Fortnite addiction that caused her to wet herself, a parent has taken the drastic step of smashing her children’s iPads to prevent them from playing the popular game.

TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp has been widely criticised for her parenting methods, however, her frustration once again draws attention to the issue of video game addiction among children.

Since launching last year, Fortnite has amassed more than 125 million players around the world, together with a fair amount of controversy. Its developer, Epic Games, has been accused of using “predatory” gambling techniques to encourage children to spend money in the game, while cybercriminals have targeted players through a series of complex campaigns.

The latest iPad smashing scandal may seem relatively minor in comparison but opens up the debate over whether playing such games is harmful to both children and adults.

Andy Robertson, a gaming journalist who has worked with Tesco Mobile to help parents keep technology healthy, told The Independent that smashing devices sends the wrong message to children as it suggests that technology is innately dangerous.

“While parents will sympathize with the frustration of children not sticking to screen time limits, a far better approach is to play together and guide them to a more varied diet of activity on those screens,” Mr. Robertson said.

“Fortnite is rated by PEGI [Pan European Game Information] as suitable for children 12 and over. It offers a positive and engaging experience where children can socialize and compete with each other online. Of course, it needs to be part of a balanced lifestyle that includes exercise and outdoor activities, but is rarely an ‘addiction’ by the high bar specified by the WHO’s gaming disorder.”

Gaming addiction was only recognized by the World Health Organisation this year but has already proved controversial. A diagnosis of internet gaming disorder requires a child to have “significant issues with a functioning” as a result of being addicted to a game or games. The disorder is defined on the organization’s website as being characterized by “impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences”.

For the disorder to be diagnosed, the behavior pattern would normally have to be evident in an individual for at least 12 months.

In order to address such issues, bioethicists have called for the NHS to be more active in offering support to people affected. One way of doing this, according to Professor Andy Miah from the University of Salford, would be for the NHS to have a presence on games like Fortnite.

“Instead of merely warning people away from computer games, healthcare professionals ought to be hacking these gaming worlds to create spaces for mental health support,” Professor Miah said.

“We need to think what services and support could be offered within these digital environments because we can’t expect young people to come out of these worlds and seek help.”

Free Fortnite Loot For PS Plus Members

Free Fortnite Loot For PS Plus Members

Here's a heads-up for everyone who plays Fortnite: Battle Royale on PS4 and has a PlayStation Plus subscription: You can download an exclusive set of in-game loot right now for free. It's called the Fortnite Battle Royale: PlayStation Plus Celebration Pack, and it comes with three in-game items you won't find anywhere else.

What kind of items are we talking about? A glider, pickaxe, and skydiving trail. The glider is called the Flappy Glider, and it sports a blue and white design, with googly eyes and a smile forming an adorable face. The axe is the Controller Pickaxe, which features blue lightning bolts, with a pair of analog stick ornaments on top. As for the skydiving trail, it sends PlayStation colors out of your extremities as you plummet from the bus.

Like with all Fortnite gear, the items in the pack are cosmetic only and do not affect gameplay (though the googly eyes might distract your enemies long enough for you to land a few shots). It's also important to note that you need a PS Plus membership to download the pack, seeing as Fortnite is one of the few games you don't actually need PS Plus to play online.

You can pick up the pack of freebies from the Fortnite PSN page, or by clicking here and adding it to your cart. This is the third set of free Fortnite gear for PS Plus members this year. The other two are no longer available, so you'll want to grab this one sooner than later to make sure you get it in time.

Fortnite is currently in its fifth season, with a whole bunch of weekly challenges still available for anyone who hasn't completed them yet. Read our full guide to Fortnite Season 5 Challenges for tips and tricks to help you get the most from the game.

Fortnite: Suppressed Assault Rifle added, Drum Gun heads to the Vault – v5.40 Content Update

Fortnite: Suppressed Assault Rifle added, Drum Gun heads to the Vault – v5.40 Content Update

Fortnite Suppressed Assault Rifle:

The Suppressed Assault Rifle is described as a “sneaky weapon that rewards trigger discipline with precision,” so we can expect that it has quite a lot of recoil – uncommon for Fortnite guns. It deals 32/33 damage per shot though, so it should rip through health bars pretty quickly at most ranges.

Some people will be sad to see the high-capacity bullet hose that was the Drum Gun go, but with the rest of the submachine guns receiving a rework, it felt a little redundant.

The patch doesn’t add a new LTM this week because the High Stakes challenges are still live – meaning you still have time to try your hand at The Getaway.

As for Save the World, Field Agent Rio joins the team, while the Weekly Horde Challenges include extra deadly and more aggressive Husks.

Fortnite v5.40 Content Update Patch Notes:

Battle Royale:

The Dances In ‘Fortnite’ Have Become Nearly As Contagious as The Game

The Dances In ‘Fortnite’ Have Become Nearly As Contagious as The Game

In our increasingly impatient, data-driven society, where matters of style and aesthetics are largely seen as a waste, art for art’s sake is thriving in an unusual place — the massively popular video game “Fortnite: Battle Royale.”

The goal in “Fortnite,” as in most multiplayer shooter games, is to blow your enemies to shreds. It follows a typical “battle royale” format, where 100 players brawl until there’s only one survivor. Though it costs nothing to play, “Fortnite” is raking in higher monthly sales — $126 million, for example, in February — than its nearest competition, “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.” How does “Fortnite” do this? By getting players to buy “skins” — avatar costumes — and avatar dances.

These elements of style are “Fortnite’s” secret sauce. Styling on other players is a big part of the thrill. After a kill, players can dance on the body, adding a fillip of humor and split-second grace to the victory. In game speak, the dances are called “emotes.” You can choose from dozens of these quick, seconds-long snatches of choreography in the game’s Item Shop. Most of the emotes are drawn from real-life dances or gestures: from fist bumps and the brush-the-shoulders dust-off to full-body expressions such as the worm, the crisscross swivel of the “Electro Shuffle” and a riff on Korean pop star Psy’s wide-legged “Gangnam Style” gallop, from his 2012 viral music video.

“Fortnite” makes clear that skins and emotes add nothing to a player’s chances of winning. A note on the shop’s page warns: “These items are cosmetic only and grant no competitive advantage.”

“They’re purely aesthetic,” says Nelson Le, 21, a University of Maryland computer science major and avid “Fortnite” player. Acquiring emotes is purely a marker of personal style, he says: “It adds another level of personality to the game.” Once, after he’d been killed, “someone emoted on my body with the Salt Bae meme” — an emote based on the meme of a chef flamboyantly sprinkling salt on his stake in an artful ta-dah move. We thought it was funny, and he added the salt emote to his others, including the bouncy “Boogie Down” and “You’re Awesome,” a crash-landing in the splits with a nonchalant recovery and quick double spin.

Le says that when he’s “in the lobby,” the waiting area where avatars assemble before the game starts, he might linger over some of his emotes, watching his avatar dab or drop into the splits, simply enjoying a performative display that collapses time into contemplative pleasure.

“It’s actually gotten me to learn a little bit about dancing,” Le says.

The “Fortnite” emotes are contagiously fun to watch, and they’ve also become fun to do, in real life. They’ve come full circle — drawn from life, re-purposed in the virtual realm and spun back to the natural world. Professional athletes have been knowing to bust some “Fortnite” moves as victory dances, most notably England’s soccer player fan Dele Alli. After scoring against Sweden in last July’s World Cup quarterfinal, the “Fortnite” fan wiggled his knees in the “Ride the Pony” emote, “Fortnite’s” reference to the choreography of “Gangnam Style.”

The swift, punchy little emotes have also taken off with little kids, teens and young adults, especially if the avatar dancing is performed in place or confined to a tight space, with repetitive, staccato motions and gestures. You can find them on YouTube with hashtags such as FORTNITEMOVES.

Why have the “Fortnite” emotes taken off in the real world? After all, dance emotes for avatars are nothing new. Other video games have them, such as “Destiny 2.”

“It’s a function of how popular the game is,” says Dave Thier, a forbes.com contributor who writes about video games. “You see people dressed up in the skins of the game, but it’s easier to just do a few moves.”

As a highly competitive game, “Fortnite” has a natural fan base among athletes, Thier adds. “Athletes have a lot of opportunities to do dances and have people look at them, and that ties into how the emotes are used in the game.”

The “Fortnite” emotes may be a relatively new phenomenon, but they reflect a truth as old as the first human footprint. They tie into a collective understanding of the body and its language. A message is transferred from the player to the community, through an avatar that’s eerily able to conjure emotion through gestures and movements.

In the avatars’ mini-choreography, a dance is distilled down to its fundamentals, the smallest particles that make it identifiable. It’s like a visual scent, a whiff of perfume left behind in an elevator, from which you can resurrect a personality and even a story. The gaming experience gets a little richer from the aesthetic charge.

In however small a way, the dance matters.

“Without the emotes you wouldn’t have any fun,” says Le. “It would just be another battle royale game.”
