10 Things That Have Changed Permanently Because Of Fortnite

10 Things That Have Changed Permanently Because Of Fortnite

More than 125 million players and earning more than $300m in a single month. I think it’s fair to say that Fortnite is a success. It might not have been the first or latest Battle Royale game to hit the market but it’s certainly the market leader for a number of different reasons (some of which you can read here and here). What is for certain though is that the epic Epic Games game has altered the face of popular culture. Footballers celebrating goals by “healing” themselves on the touchline. Rappers streaming the game to tens of thousands of viewers. An entirely new disease called “Fortitis” was discovered among teens and young adults bunking off school/work to watch Ninja do his thang. The game’s taking over the world and we thought we’d take a look at 10 things that Fortnite has changed irreparably.

1). Season Passes

Prior to the explosion of Fortnite, the term ‘Season Pass’ in relation to gaming was used as a catch-all which gamers could purchase to get instant access to a series of DLC packs from new playable characters, skins, levels, cars etc. Fortnite, however, ushered in the acceptance of a new type of Season Pass. Instead of granting you access to all of the DLC that you’ve just purchased, Fortnite opens up a new progression path for players which rewards them with new skins, emotes, gliders and now pets depending on how much and how well you play. Buying a Battle Pass in Fortnite gives you the opportunity to earn new cosmetic items, rather than exchanging your real-world cash for all the in-game objects meaning which, while not a new concept (having been used in F2P mobile gaming for a few years), has certainly become a widely accepted practice thanks to Fortnite which is now employed in other games like Rocket League.

2). The Popularity of Llamas

Llamas. Lama glama. The odd cousin in the Camel family. Before the explosion of Fortnite, Llama’s were simply ‘fine’. Sure, they were once the shape of a crunchy BBQ snack and they were the star of a really annoying YouTube sensation circa 2006 but it’s not as if they were ever really popular. Fast forward to 2018 and the Llama’s at safari parks and the zoo are around the world are more popular than ever. “That’s a llama! Like in Fortnite!” a group of kids excitedly pointed out during a recent Zoo trip (despite the fact that the animal they were excited about was actually an unenthused alpaca). While they’re still not exactly ‘Clownfish and Blue Tang in a tank together at the Aquarium, just like Finding Nemo’ famous, Llama’s have never before been so popular and it’s all down to Fortnite.

Plus they’re awesome.

2). Map Evolutions

Aside from maybe Call of Duty’s Nuketown, has there ever been a map that’s been through as many changes as the Fortnite’s Battle Royale Island? The comet changing Dusty Depot into Dusty Divot. The cubes. Entire new biomes just springing up, providing new places to explore and pogo around as you dodge shotgun blasts. While most other games in the Battle Royale genre have decided to release new maps for people to glide onto like a traditional game, Epic took the bold decision to keep with the same map but to regularly update it, building in a narrative about how and why it changes. It’s smart and something that Epic are really making their own with Fortnite, setting a new standard in storytelling in a usually plot void genre.

4). The Physical Fitness of 9-14 Year Olds

Walk into any classroom across the UK and say “TAKE THE L” and at least a few kids will jump right to it, replicating the Fortnite celebration. There are now even fitness classes built around the ever popular emotes, giving kids the space to go wild with their Flossing while staying fit in the process. During my childhood, the only physical exertion that was encouraged by gaming was holding up a light-gun for long periods of time to play the Die Hard trilogy so to see the young gamers of today inadvertently getting a tonne of exercise by dancing along to Fortnite can only be a good thing.

5). The word “Fortnight”

Here’s a test for you. Go to Google and type in ‘Fort’. What does Auto-complete bring up? If you’re reading this, I bet it’s the word ‘Fortnite’. Now go to send a Tweet or a text or something and do the same. I bet your phone’s suggesting the words ‘Forton’ and ‘Fortnite’ before the word ‘Fortnight’. Not that this is doing the word ‘Fortnight’ any harm. Since Fortnite exploded, Google search results for the word ‘Fortnight’ have skyrocketed and I doubt many of these people were trying to find a term for “fourteen nights”.

6). Cross-Play

“THE POWER OF FORTNITE COMPELS YOU” Microsoft screamed at Sony as the Japanese tech giant trashed around in resistance. “I CAST YOU OUT, RESISTANT SPIRIT” Nintendo chimed in. “But we’re the market leader and we've got the best place to play Fortnite!” Sony retorted during a long evaluation period in which they weighed up their options before making a decision. Finally, the evil spirit was vanquished and the doors between consoles were opened. But seriously, Fortnite is such a force within gaming now that it was a primary reason Sony completely rethought their policy on crossplay. It was bound to happen eventually; each and every tweet from an official PlayStation Twitter account was met with a barrage of “Fortnite Cross-Play When?” tweets and it was starting to be a really bad look for Sony.

While Fortnite crossplay is currently in Beta with Sony, the Battle Royale game might be the crowbar that opens up the door for more games to enable cross-platform play and that’s great for everyone involved.

7). The Word “Floss”

It might have been invented by a 16-year-old Instagram-famous American schoolboy called Russell Horning but the immense popularity of ‘Flossing’, a dance move where you swing your arms around, came about because of Fortnite and its emote. Unfortunately, the word floss, which was synonymous with pulling string between your teeth to clean them up until 2017, has lost its original meaning entirely on the internet. In fact, right now, a Google search for the word ‘Floss’ brings back pages filled with a mix of videos on how to floss and articles on the popularity of the dance move before you even hit a ‘dental floss’ result. Poor Oral B.

8). Stacks of Tyres in games

Some things become ingrained within the collective gaming subconscious. Red barrels explode when they get shot. Eating food heals any ailment including gunshot wounds and scratches from a Deathclaw. Springs bounce you upwards, no matter what force you apply to them. A stack of tires then, Fortnite’s own rubber bounce pad, is quickly embedding itself in the gaming lexicon. Since the release of Hello Neighbour on consoles, I’ve seen 3 separate YouTubers attempt (and fail) to jump on the tires outside the house in the game to try and get a bounce, such as a relationship that a stack of tires and bounce jumps now have thanks to Fortnite. Of course, Earthworm Jim started the bouncy tires thing back in the 90’s and don’t you forget it.

9). The Vocabulary of Teenage Gamers

If there’s one odd positive to Fortnite, it’s that it’s helping younger gamers pronounce historically “tricky words” (as my son’s teacher describes them). Words like ‘Depot’ (From the long-lost Dusty Depot), which when spoken phonetically is pronounced “de-pot”, is being pronounced correctly by many children thanks to Fortnite. There’s a greater understanding of terms like ‘links’ and ‘lodge’, words that are not often used outside of Golf courses and those attempting to survive a horror movie, too. As an inadvertent side effect, Fortnite is giving teenagers a bigger vocabulary.

Now, Epic Games, if you wouldn’t mind aligning your next map changes with the Key Stage 4 syllabus, that’d be great.

10). The Battle Royale Genre

Fortnite has truly and irreparably changed the face of Battle Royale games. Before it joined the genre, every BR game had one aim – be the last person standing. Fortnite revolutionized this by adding side challenges and tasks to complete which mean that even those who’ve never claimed a Victory Royale can still get some enjoyment out of it. Each week’s challenges add a little more spice to the proceedings (especially when a named location is involved and you get 50 people descending on Greasy Grove or Haunted Hills looking for chests) as everyone attempts to level up to finally unlock John Wick/Ragnarok/Omega by earning those stars. It’s a smart retention system that almost every other BR game has started to adopt.

Fortnite Season 6’s Weekly Challenges Are So Easy They’re Not Even Fun Anymore

Fortnite Season 6’s Weekly Challenges Are So Easy They’re Not Even Fun Anymore

The weekly challenges have long been a topic of debate for Fortnite fans. The subreddit is filled with people bringing their own suggestions to the table, desperate for Epic to take note and replace the tired ‘Search Chests’ or ‘Eliminate Opponents in X named location’ variants we’ve seen time and time again.

It puts Epic Games in a difficult spot. It has to try and balance fans’ thirst for new and exciting challenges, while also ensuring they’re not too ‘out of reach’ of the general population of Fortnite players. The beginning of Season 6 has certainly brought about a shift in the weekly challenges. While it wasn’t quite so noticeable in week one, the week two challenges just released today feel, well… way too easy to really be deemed ‘challenges.

In the past, the weekly challenges have tasked players with doing all manner of bizarre stuff. We’ve had to dance in front of forbidden dance signs, we’ve had to hit golf balls from the tee to the green, and find hidden treasure maps and use them to find the treasure. We even had to seek out hungry, laughing gnomes, which is as terrifying as it sounds.

It’s this kind of zany, off-the-wall vibe that’s made Fortnite what it is. It stands out from other battle royale titles because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. That should still be something Epic strives to achieve with its weekly challenges, even if they have to get a little easier to cater to the larger audience.

The first two sets of weekly challenges in Season 6 have almost entirely done away with these non-combat focused tasks. Instead, the week 1 challenge required us to use shields until we’d applied 500 in total. Another had us searching three chests (just in general, not at any particular locale), while one of the free challenges for the week required us to pick up different legendary items. To anyone who’s got a relatively good idea of what they’re doing in Fortnite, these aren’t tricky. In fact, if you’re not aiming to do these kinds of things in a game, you’re doing it all wrong. It wasn’t all bad. Granted, we did get another ‘dancing’ challenge, tasking us with finding streetlight spotlights to dance under, but that’s one out of seven.

In a sense, then, the week 1 challenge could be seen as a means of helping new players ease into the action. It was the start of the season, after all. But then, it gets worse with the week 2 challenges. Out of the seven we get each week, five of these are literally focused on dealing damage with different weapon types, more or less. Deal damage with pistols to opponents reads one. SMG Eliminations (3), reads another. ‘Deal Damage with Standard Assault Rifles to Opponents (200).’ You get the idea.

The only remotely interesting challenges from this second week are to visit all Corrupted Areas and to use a Shadow Stone in three different matches. Which are, essentially, a challenge you’ll likely tick off while doing the other, what with Shadow Stones only spawning at Corrupted Areas. I’d grown a little tired of finding hidden treasures or searching chests in a specific named location, but I’d take them any day over challenges I don’t even need to try in order to complete.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for being able to blast through Battle Pass tiers and get me that sweet Dire skin, but where’s the fun? How are players supposed to have hilarious pickaxe showdowns when there’s no hidden treasure for us all to land at? Challenges aren't challenging if you can just complete them as you play naturally. Sure, in the case of the pistols challenge, it might push players out of their comfort zone, but it’s less the case for assault rifles and SMGs.

Epic Games has seldom if ever, put a foot wrong when it comes to Fortnite thus far. Its commitment to providing constant, weekly updates and new content drops should be applauded. It’s constantly changing the map, introducing new weapons, and making balance tweaks in order to maintain a fair playing field, and most importantly, it listens to its fans.

It’s this that gives me hope for Fortnite Season 6’s weekly challenges going forward. Epic Games has tried to re-balance fun with difficulty in its weekly challenges, and instead lent too far in one direction. Here’s hoping the weekly challenges will up the ante as the season progresses. Or just that the week 3 challenges tip the balance back towards the centre a little. Because, as of right now, Season 6’s challenges have lost that special Fortnite magic.

Battlerite Royale Isn't a Fortnite Killer But It's a Serious Contender

Battlerite Royale Isn't a Fortnite Killer But It's a Serious Contender

Battlerite Royale Impressions

Battlerite, the free-to-play team-based multiplayer action game, is releasing a standalone game called Battlerite Royale (you might be able to guess what genre it falls into). It’s, well, not free to play, but hey, it’s just important that it’s fun-to-play, right? We’ve got our initial impressions on Battlerite Royale in the video below.

With the title in early access, there’s a good possibility that some of Battlerite Royale’s issues will clear up over time. Of course, technically Fortnite is in early access still too, so you never know. With a lot of pros and cons to Battlerite Royale as it is, the good loot balancing with how much you have to grind to get it, the gameplay experience being highly dependent on where you spawn, and the long load times, there are some definite drawbacks to the experience as it is. However, the story is surprisingly strong and it’s definitely worth a try, especially if you’ve got a friend to play it with.

In Battlerite Royale players skydive from the back of a wyvern and land on Talon Island to explore the lush and colourful surroundings, stumbling upon a variety of items and intriguing consumables such as barrel disques, rocket boots, and bear traps. During fast-paced, cutthroat matches players rely on vigilance and quick wits, utilizing treasured collectibles to overthrow opposing players, grab their loot, and ultimately be the last one standing. The Early Access launch of Battlerite Royale features 20 different Champions to choose from, each with unique fighting styles, so even the most demanding players will find the right fit for the playstyle style.

Have you played the game yet? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Is The New Rocket League Hot Wheels Triple Threat DLC Pack Worth Your Cash?

Is The New Rocket League Hot Wheels Triple Threat DLC Pack Worth Your Cash?

Rocket League and Psyonix keep the cash cow moving with this latest DLC pack, coming ‘hot’ off the ‘wheels’ of their first Rocket Pass. This pack celebrates the 50th anniversary of Hot Wheels with some brand-new cars based off classic Hot Wheels designs.

Coming in priced at £4.79 the Rocket League Hot Wheels Triple Threat Pack offers three new cars which make this one of the largest bundles available for the game, and also the most expensive. What you get through – along with the three cars – are some exclusive decals, unique wheels and toppers too.

It is also worth noting that whilst this premium DLC is coming out, Rocket League is also getting a host of free content as well, separate from both this DLC pack and the Rocket Pass. This includes a brand new Hot Wheels Rivals arena featuring signature Hot Wheels loop tracks at either goal side, and several new customisation items, so those that don’t feel this is worth the price won’t be completely left out.

First up in the DLC pack are the three new cars: Gazella GT, MR11 and Fast 4WD. The Gazella and MR11 are both slick looking vehicles with streamlined bodies. The MR11 has a huge front grill, armoured wheels and side plates that will no doubt intimidate those on the other side of the pitch come kickoff. Complete with a curved front window that stretches completely around the sides, this is a car built for both speed and destruction. Fun Fact: This car was actually designed by Marco Reus, the German international footballer.

Whilst the Gazella GT shares a similar body shape, this is a much more elegant machine. The front looks like a newer model Mazda MX-5 with a curved front and thin, narrow lights. This is the kind of car that deftly flicks the ball over the keeper with a mid-air pirouette to score, rather than unleashing a 35-yard Thunderbastard.

That’s where the Fast 4WD comes in. This design is not too dissimilar to the recent influx of SUVs in the real-world, looking like a brute but also compact and speedy. It has since become my default car when playing online. With six bright lights on the front and an absolutely massive spoiler on the back, it quickly became my favourite of the pack.

Whilst their shape may certainly look the part, the paint jobs need to match. Thankfully each car comes with four unique decals, many emblazoning the Hot Wheels 50thanniversary proudly on the car.

Equally important, are tyres and engine noise. Again, these cars have unique sounds and tyres to really drive these designs home.

Finally – to ‘top’ things off – are three unique toppers that take their inspiration from classic Hot Wheels playsets. ‘Spider’, ‘Snake’ and ‘Gorilla’ all feature animated toppers that recreate the playsets that put your Hot Wheels cars in peril when you were younger. Gorilla bursts through the roof of your car, Spider spins an intricate web and Snake looks downright menacing while a car circles around them on the iconic orange tracks.

There is no question that these new premium cars look the real deal – expect to receive a barrage of messages when you turn up on the field sporting one of these designs asking just where you got it from. My only concern goes to those that have recently forked out for the Rocket Pass to unlock further premium cosmetic items, and now here is another pack priced at £4.79. It would be nice to see just one or the other, or at least a discount on this pack for those that own the Rocket Pass.

But for the more casual player that just wants some fancy new cars then having three-in-one for a reasonable price makes more sense. Just watch out when you line up in them against me, I will destroy them!

Epic Apologizes For And Removes Calamity Skin’s “Embarrassing” Boob Psychics In Fortnite

Epic Apologizes For And Removes Calamity Skin’s “Embarrassing” Boob Psychics In Fortnite

If you weren’t playing Fortnite during the first few hours after the Season 6 (v6.0 update) you probably missed it. The Season 6 Battle Pass ‘Calamity’ Skin had some interesting physics in the upper-torso region which produced jiggle.

For scientific purposes, below you can see the aforementioned effect in action.

According to a statement to IGN by Epic Games, this was unintentionally shipped to production and was never intended to be in-game.

This is unintended, embarrassing, and it was careless for us to let this ship. We are working now to fix this as soon as possible.

Epic has since disabled parts of the character animation system until an update can be shipped to remove this specific animation.

Neverwinter’s Latest Ban Spree is Rocking the Community with Many Pointing Fingers at Cryptic Studios

Neverwinter’s Latest Ban Spree is Rocking the Community with Many Pointing Fingers at Cryptic Studios

Something is rotten in the state of Neverwinter, and the community is responding to it.

If you are a frequenter of the Neverwinter subreddit or Discord, and you’ve snoozed past this last weekend, you may not have even noticed. That is, of course, intentional–both forums have been sanitized of the controversy. But Twitter is telling a different tale, with nearly every official Tweet from the studio being followed with mixed messages of support and vitriol.

The problem? A thorough ban-hammer swung by Cryptic Studios at everyone who has been using a long-identified exploit. And with reportedly thousands affected, the community is split on where to shift the blame.

To give you a quick primer on the Hunt Exploit at the centre of the controversy, it comes down to Astral Diamonds–one of Neverwinter‘s in-game currencies. Cryptic describes Astral Diamonds (AD) as “one of the most useful types of currencies in the game,” with a similar spending power to the micro-transaction currency, Zen. After refining the AD, players are able to use them in-game to speed up progression, buy gear, and even trade it for Zen.

While certain high-AD earning quests are blocked behind gates that require items (in this case, Tarokka Cards), this Hunt Exploit allowed for players to re-play the Barovia Hunts to earn salvage (which can be turned into Astral Diamonds) or Refinement Points indefinitely.

In other words, the game had a glitch where players could make the equivalent of in-game currency.

The bug has been around for seemingly months, with it being rolled out during June 26’s Ravenloft module for PC. However, things didn’t start gaining traction until August 28 when the module went live, still unpatched, on consoles.

It’s impossible to say without more precise numbers how many people used the exploits (though we did ask); whether it is a vocal minority or affecting the most core part of the fanbase substantially. Regardless, guilds were able to produce 100,000 astral diamonds every 30 minutes.

The exploit was officially patched out on August 29th, however, the PC update managed to get fixed much quicker than the console versions. It wasn’t until September 12th that Cryptic Studios formally responded to the console version of the exploit, and this time it was with a warning:

We will be reviewing playlogs and any character found using the exploit will be subject to possible actions taken against player accounts as per our Terms of Service.

Of course, there are always two sides of any story–so let’s start with Cryptic Studios. Chatting briefly with the PR for Cryptic, they think the issue is cut-and-dry:

Exploits such as this one can negatively impact the health of Neverwinter and affects its players. The exploit is now fixed; players who chose to abuse the Hunts system were in violation of our Terms of Service, so action was taken against them. Any players who would like to dispute actions against their account can contact our Customer Service team.

But not everything is so black-and-white for the community as a whole. We caught up with J.P. Harvey, a casual MMO player on console who plays Neverwinter with his wife, and has been for about six months. Between their busy lives, they manage to squeeze in a few hours daily. Their guild knew that they spent less time playing the game, and passed along the exploit as a way to catch up — so they took the opportunity. According to J.P., he thought:

Hey, they aren’t too concerned. Otherwise, they would have made sure the code didn’t make console….  New players just don’t have that kind of time to grind to honestly play the newer content.  My wife and I have been saving for a couple of months with hopes to get gear and diamonds and such so we can play with our friends.

Even worse, the exploit was seen as a necessary way to stay ahead. With many people already gaming the system for the rare currency for months, it was clear that high-ranked players and guilds were making leaps and bounds–when the currency is auctionable and items can be bought with in-game currency, this sort of exploit imbalances the entire system. While this is why Cryptic Studios enforced the bans, it is the reason driving many people to use the exploit, to begin with.

Meanwhile, Neverwinter community streamer Nova (who maintains a more than 14,000 subscriber base on YouTube), also found himself on the ban list. Despite playing since launch on PC, he never thought he would see himself on the other end of the ban list–especially given that he was conducting Q/A interviews with the lead developer just days earlier.

To Nova, the problem comes down to the time it took for Cryptic Studios to address the problem:

It doesn’t make any sense, to be aware of a game breaking exploit, and allow it to reach a PC live launch and console live launch, being fully capable of fixing the issue prior to these live launches.

Though, ultimately, he would have been happy even getting the notification that he was banned:

It would be nice if Cryptic actually sent out emails to everyone that was banned, but many people including myself have yet to get an email.

And with Cryptic effectively controlling Neverwinter‘s Reddit, Discord, and forums, Nova states it is nearly impossible to have a discussion with developers to air their grievances:

I would suggest that Cryptic should have made an announcement day one when they got notice of this exploit, by making a statement on their official game page, twitter, and or/reddit and discord. But unfortunately, you’re not allowed to discuss or talk about things like that on the forums or you’ll be banned.

J.P. seemed to take his ban in stride, though takes aim at the idea of banning people for something from often unreadable Terms of Service:

I can already see the toxic commentary “Good, one less cheater. Bye Felicia”. And I get the very well written terms of service agreement so that the designers are afforded the luxury to do whatever they want and use TOS to justify it…. They could have done a neat special mount for anyone who didn’t bug hunt, or an in game item. Instead, they created a memorable moment for people to remember and remember well when it comes time to open their wallets. I know in my guild, people are moving on. And so are we.

And, seemingly, the community is not yet moving on from the now week-old bans. Every social media post seems flooded with the hashtag #DontBuyZen.

Update: On the other end, not everyone from the community is so incensed about the move by Cryptic Studios. A reader reached out after publishing the article, looking to anonymously support how the devs have handled the Neverwinter situation:

Knowingly running something that you know is against the intent of the game is cheating and the vast majority of people that were banned did it expressly for personal gain. The actions taken against these people was long overdue and was not the companies fault but the fault of the ones cheating/exploiting.

In my brief conversation with the anonymous Twitch streamer and Neverwinter community member, he rallied against a lot of the comments from the article–making points that people who intentionally go into the exploit with the notion of cheating to get ahead shouldn’t complain after they cheat.

Lets [sic.] be clear these are people that exploited the game, in essence cheating,  and saying that it is the games fault for not fixing the exploit faster. This is basically the same as saying it is not a crime if you do not get caught.

This Neverwinter player went on to discuss that Cryptic shouldn’t explicitly be blamed for making the occasional mistake in their bans, given that the issue is so widespread:

Yes, there was collateral damage in the sweep, but the number of people using the cheat was so large that the margin for error was also going to be large.

But, anecdotally, the player wants people to know that Cryptic Studios seems to mostly keeping the permanent bans few and far between:

The number of actual permanent bans were small and from what we are hearing now, a lot of them are being turned into suspensions once people contact support about it.

Perhaps the perfect solution lies somewhere in the middle; the community should likely never have capitalized on the exploit, however, it’s difficult to penalize the core audience after two months of not getting a fix. Either way, Neverwinter is dealing with a significant PR fallout with some of its (once) loyal fanbase and a non-negligible loss of players month-over-month. Whether Cryptic Studios is able to turn this situation around and welcome back since-banned players have yet to be seen.

Fortnite Is So Big It Can Bully Sony And Nintendo

Fortnite Is So Big It Can Bully Sony And Nintendo

Fortnite is undeniably one of the biggest games in the world, but today we saw an example of just how big it is. Sony’s long-standing (and, frankly, embarrassing) stance against cross-play with other consoles is finally coming to an end, and Fortnite is pretty much leading the charge.

Developer Epic Games has been vocal in the past about wanting Sony to embrace cross-play (alongside developers like Psyonix and Bethesda), and actually accidentally enabled the feature briefly last year. Sony even caused a big headache for Epic during Fortnite’s launch on Switch as players who had previously played on PS4 discovered their accounts couldn’t carry over – an issue Sony didn’t have much to say about at the time.

The Fortnite bear had been metaphorically poked at that point, and the conversation around cross-play noticeably shifted. Sony said they were “confident we’ll get to a solution” later that month, and even when they defended their stance they did so in the context of Fortnite.

The building battle royale was the straw that broke the loot llama’s back, as Sony said Fortnite is just the first of “select third-party content” to get cross-play with other consoles. It’s not a stretch to think this change wouldn’t have come (or at least not as quickly) without Fornite’s Switch launch being marred by controversy.

Impressively, this isn’t even the first time Epic has influenced a first-party developer into overturning a stupid decision for Fortnite. The Switch’s almost comically inconvenient voice chat phone app that’s mandatory for most online multiplayer games is ignored entirely by Fornite, allowing you to plug a regular headset directly into the system instead.

That’s something people had previously thought was a technical impossibility, but apparently, you just have to be the biggest game in the world to get it to work. Nintendo has been notoriously cautious about letting its generally younger-skewing player base talk with strangers online. But Fortnite was an instant exception to this, and since then Nintendo has even added the ability to talk to strangers online in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – assuming you use the phone app.

Fortnite is so pervasive that it’s currently the only game in the world that is being sold in bundles with all three major consoles – despite being a free-to-play game. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all recognize the influence it has and wants the Fortnite logo on their box, and they’re clearly willing to compromise previously held policies or decisions to make Epic comfortable.

I don’t think Fortnite is going to be this big forever, but it’s a level of popularity that I’ve never really seen for a third-party game before, and one we may not see for a long time after. Thankfully for all of us, so far Epic seems to be wielding their power to help push through changes that are best for gamers. Here’s hoping they don’t suddenly turn evil and make trackballs mandatory for all future controllers.

Explosive Environments Possibly Coming To Fortnite

Explosive Environments Possibly Coming To Fortnite

Eric Williamson, the Lead Designer for Fortnite at Epic Games, has recently suggested that explosive environments will be coming soon to Fortnite.

A Reddit user by the name of Iqid_Loopz has recently posted to the r/FortniteBR subreddit with an idea for the already existing environmental items in Fortnite to be made explosive and able to be used tactically against players. The user backed up their idea by highlighting select locations in the game which could explode if shot or triggered by a player. For example, if a Fortnite player shot an item such as an explosive red barrel, or hit it with a pickaxe – it would explode and hurt anyone within range.

This is seen in lots of video games, and is almost a cliche – but in a Battle Royale perspective, the idea could be used very tactically. However, we may actually see this idea come to life – as Eric Williamson, Lead Designer for Fortnite at Epic Games, actually commented on the post the Reddit user made.

“We’ve discussed this a few times, it’s a great idea. Unfortunately haven’t been able to get around to it yet but would love to in the near future. Any objects that would do stuff other than explode?”

Looks like we may actually be seeing this idea implemented into the game, even though Season 6 is around the corner and Epic Games may have their hands full. Either way, we can almost guarantee this is a feature that is coming to the game.

Fortnite Season 6 Release Delayed Until September 27 Giving 400% XP Bonus

Unfortunately, Fortnite Season 6 will be delayed until September 27th. And to make up with the delay and celebrate its arrival, Epic Games has confirmed a 400% bonus XP for every match starting now until September 24th.

This delay is not actually new if you’re an online game. It usually happens every time and most of the time, developers are giving some bonus for the delay. In the case of Fortnite, Epic Games activated the 400% XP match bonus.

Every season, Fortnite players are surprised with something mysterious in the game. According to their official statement, Season 6 launch date will include new contents, which will likely change the theme of the game or map. For this season, Epic Games has teased players by releasing a giant purple cube transforming Loot Lake into a jelly-like pad.
