The battle royale genre has seen its share of ups and downs in 2018, but one title that was consistently up throughout the year was Epic Games’ Fortnite. One potential reason for the game’s huge fan base and dominance is the amount of support Fortnite gets in the form of frequent content updates and in-game events. And in 2018, the battle royale title saw everything from new standout limited-time modes (LTMs) and some worthy new weapon additions to some unique seasonal events and gameplay changes.
When reflecting back in 2018, which can arguably be defined as the year of Fortnite, it’s hard to say that the game looks the same as it did back in January. Of course, it’s the same hybrid shooter at its heart, but because of several changes, players have had to continuously adapt and improve over the past year.
Although every season features some type of map change for Fortnite‘s battle island, there have been two major changes that stand out this year. The battle island used to be almost entirely green in some way—that is, until season 5 introduced the desert biome. With it, the popular Paradise Palms location was also created, and the desert backdrop did much to change up the scenery of the game.
Season 7 took it a step further with the introduction of an arctic biome, which features three new named locations, one of which temporarily housed the Infinity Blade. It’s uncertain what will become of this biome when season 7 and winter end, but considering the Ice King’s castle is there, it doesn’t seem likely to be going anywhere soon.
A large amount of hype usually precedes teased map changes, none of which have been teased or theorized as much as the destruction of Tilted Towers. Beginning with the season 3 comets that battered Tilted Towers, it has been a location many have hoped (for one reason or another) would be destroyed. This led to theories that Kevin the Cube would destroy the named location, or even AIM robots as part of the season 7 initiation.
Despite never actually being destroyed, Tilted Towers has seen its fair share of changes, as many who drop in the high-density zone can attest. It was originally added in season 2 but developed a huge crater in season 4 after the season 3 comets. Tilted Towers slowly rebuilt over season 5, resulting in a new sports shop added to the named location—that was before Kevin the Cube rolled through and destroyed the area once again (1 week after its completion). Season 7 is now working on a new building in the area, but its future is not looking good.
Whether or not Tilted Towers ever becomes something different remains to be seen, but considering its popularity in the battle royale title and its prominent role in the meta, it doesn’t seem very likely.
When Fortnite first launched, it was a common strategy to build up a fort and bunker down. This strategy directly led to the “Just Build LOL” attitude about the game and even to the backlash when Port-a-Forts was first announced. But slowly, season to season, Fortnite has moved away from this bunker down and fight method to a more mobile battle royale game, thanks to the introduction of mobility items like the grappler and balloons.
Of course, there will always be speed builders, but for those who can’t master that particular strategy, there is another way to come at a fight. It’s not an uncommon sight nowadays to see a speed builder vs. ballooner fight, which is one of the small changes that will go a long way for Fortnite‘s quality of life.
The popularity of Fortnite was a direct contributor to the cross-play controversy that went down earlier this year. Even though Sony eventually relented and Fortnite would go on to be the first game to get legitimate console cross-play support, this may have never happened if it weren’t for the pressure of the myriad Fortnite fans who wanted to test their skills across consoles.
It’s worth mentioning that this decision was just the first domino, as cross-play support will indubitably change up the gaming industry as a whole. In fact, we named it as one of the biggest video game news stories of 2018.
When completing a weeks’ worth of challenges, it’s always nice to hunt down a hidden battle star, as they give a free tier on the Battle Pass. In season 5, this meant that there were 10 free tiers earned by just completing challenges. Yet, come season 6 week 2, fans of the battle royale title were greeted with a hidden banner, instead of a hidden battle star. This set up a weekly rotation that continues on, even now in season 7.
Earning a hidden banner is a cool cosmetic addition to the locker, but at the same time, receiving only 5 tiers for all the effort put in is a bit lackluster. Some may disagree with this change, but it was likely made to help balance out the pace by which players complete the Battle Pass (especially for those who complete it early on anyway).
Back in May, Fortnite added its first vehicle to the game. To some, it was a surprise, but many loved the absurdity that came with a shopping cart being the first vehicle to appear in the game. It was followed by the All-Terrain Kart (ATK), Quadcrusher, and now the X-4 Stormwing, the first aerial vehicle to appear in the game. These have led to crazy kills, new ways to cross the map, and fun ways to play with friends or strangers. With the addition of the plane and the mobility items, some of these vehicles like the shopping cart don’t get much use anymore—unless it’s for a challenge— but that doesn’t make them any less noteworthy.
At the beginning of the year, it was revealed Fortnite Battle Royale was moving on the mobile market, with the iOS version releasing shortly after and the Android version coming out this past summer. This decision has helped ensure the dominance of the game at every level, with the battle royale title being available on practically every platform imaginable. Not to mention, the mobile versions directly contributed to the popularity and profitability of the game, as developer Epic Games has reportedly made $3 billion dollars in 2018.
In season 4, a massive community rocket launch saw the sky crack. In this brief moment, everyone stopped to watch and the killing stopped. If that description wasn’t epic enough, this rift in the sky would go on to be involved with several other changes on the Fortnite island, including rifts and the Kevin the Cube event. This, alongside the season 3 meteors, is easily one of the most memorable season transitions of the year.
Fortnite creative mode, following it the footsteps of the Playground LTM, was a well-received season 7 addition to the game that allows players to design their own islands. Moreover, at the game awards 2018, it was revealed that Risky Reels has been replaced with The Block, a space that would house fan-created locales.
Kevin the Cube appeared halfway through season 5, shot out of the crack in the sky. It moved slowly across the battle island, altering gravity and leaving strange runes in its wake, before eventually landing in Loot Lake.
Many thought this would be the last of the Cube, but the season 6 kicked off with the cube raising the house into the sky, creating the floating island. It slowly toured the island, collecting the previously created runes, before returning to the lake. There, the trans-seasonal cube would finally be destroyed, with a flash of a white screen and some butterflies floating around. All of this led to the creation of Leaky Lake.
Of course, 2018 is ending soon, and season 7 is taking players into 2019. We’re not sure what to expect following this season quite yet, but hopefully, everything continues to do well for Epic Games and Fortnite in the new year. But there is no doubt Fortnite has plans for this very special occasion.

The eighteen-year-old genius, television star, and popular game developer Erwin Arclight seems to have it all. With tons of admirers praising his prowess, what more could he ask for? Erwin’s only fault — though ultimately his source of power — is the pleasure he receives from chasing new experiences, so when the Great Void brought death and destruction to the world, he didn’t hesitate to investigate. As fate would have it, Erwin’s encounter with the Great Void awoke an inner power, making him into a SoulWorker. With transforming dual handguns “Gun Jazz” at his side and an over-confident grin on his face, Erwin fears no foe.
Available now through a free game update via Steam and the Gameforge portal, Erwin’s class advancement upgrades this gunslinger with an explosive rifle as a secondary weapon and six new skills! This cocky commander can now order a platoon to perform more powerful attacks upon his request or summon an adorable but deadly robot for support. Additional skills allow Erwin to bombard foes while looking cool on a hoverboard and bolster his attack power. Erwin’s even got himself some new flair as well — sporting an alternate outfit that will surely help him reach his new level cap of 60 in style.
Hub city Grassover Camp gets some fresh new additions today — adding the Carnivore Park
and Meat Factory mazes, four challenging dungeons, and three difficulty levels for hardcore players looking for greater risks and rewards. But that’s not all; the young SoulWorkers are in for some Holiday capers with the release of the Christmas Event. Santa-Grutin has come to town and with him a bunch of new rewards available to players who collect and trade in snowflake crystals — from winter accessories, surprise gift boxes, player titles, and access to the new Lonely Party festive maze. This is the update that keeps on giving!

Epic Games must feel pretty dizzy right now after its own Christmas Revelry. A lot of reports and complaints from Fortnite players who would have had their good time in the game on Wednesday ended going the other way around, claimed that they had got stuck with the frequent timeouts in the long queues or logging issues during entry to game servers. The company soon was aware of the issue and tweeted that an investigation towards the root behind the outage that some users were encountering with, was initiated already.
The problem was recurred by us several hours ago, with the game frequently putting us into a queue for 5 minutes before timing out. However, after trying so hard at so many times, we did successfully log in one time and then, theatrically, running into the message"Unable to join the Fortnite login queue. Please try again later." One hour later, the queue is stretching around 10 minutes. We still don't manage to log in at the end of the queue countdown.
Epic Games has directed the agonizing Fortnite Holiday players to its status page, where the company indicates that "minor service outage" having an impact on Game Services. The page also clarifies that Login and Matchmaking services are currently in the "Degraded Performance" status. TechCrunch already reached out to Epic regarding the cause of the downtime.

While it’s not quite as catastrophic for an online game as a proper Christmas day outage, the time between Christmas and New Year’s is sure to be a massive week for Epic’s hit game. Given that Epic makes bank charging for cosmetic upgrades through an online store, we’d be curious how much revenue the company loses every minute Fortnite is down during a peak play time. On the other hand, we might rather not know.

Grinding Gear Games have provided action RPG enthusiasts and fanatics with a hardcore alternative in an increasingly casualized genre. We had a talk with Chris Wilson - the man at Path of Exile's helm ever since its humble garage origins.
AltChar: What are your general expectations from Path of Exile's upcoming PlayStation 4 launch?
Chris Wilson: We’re very optimistic about the PlayStation launch. Both because there are a lot of PlayStation users looking forward to playing Path of Exile, but also because it helps us bring attention to the Xbox One version as well, as having two console versions lets us address far more console users.
Xbox is a platform we have already launched on, and are growing its community over time. We want to make sure we don’t miss any marketing opportunities by being on both console platforms, which allows us to promote console Path of Exile in general.
AC: Path of Exile has already launched on Xbox One. What benefits can that experience provide for the PlayStation 4 release?
CW: One of the things we’ve learned is how to design user interfaces that are better for consoles. Initially, some of the UI was a bit more suited for PC. While we were working on the Xbox version, we’ve learned to make a parallel version of the user interface for Xbox that is a bit easier to use with a controller, alongside the PC version. This is something we are now pretty good at doing. So, when new features are made, we can make an Xbox version of them immediately. Of course, because Path of Exile now has a generalized console version, this means that PlayStation players will be able to enjoy the same UI improvements.
The controls are different, and the deployment timelines are a bit different as well. Having to work around the platform certification periods and so on, we have to make sure we have those versions ready as early as possible.
AC: Path of Exile was supposed to hit PlayStation 4 in December. What are the particulars of delaying the release to February 2019?
CW: The Christmas Holiday in New Zealand is a quite long holiday. Because it’s the only significant holiday in the year, the staff members often take three or four weeks away. While that’s of course not the case for every developer on the PS4 version, there’s certainly enough disruption that we didn’t want to take the risk of launching into a period where people are away.
In addition, there are shutdowns for publishers over Christmas. We wanted to make sure that we’ve given them enough time to actually test the game fully. We can also use the additional time because we want to juice out every bit of performance on the platform that we can and fix every bug, so that time will be well spent polishing the product.

AC: What improvements can PS4 Pro and Xbox One X owners look forward to?
CW: One of the things that we’ve turned on for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro is global illumination, which is only possible on PC if you’ve got a decent graphics card. Of course, those consoles are powerful and that means that they can use those features. It makes the game look really nice, because every colored bright source basically casts the light of the appropriate color near it, and it really makes the world feel a lot more vibrant.
AC: Are there any plans to enable cross-platform play for Path of Exile?
CW: It’s something we’d like to achieve, but of course there are many factors in play. We haven’t spoken to the platform-holders about it recently, and their stances might have changed since we last did, so it’s something we’ll be investigating once we’ve got the PlayStation platform launched and running.
There’s some advantage to PlayStation having its own community before enabling cross-play. It means that PlayStation users can learn the game together, as opposed to being completely new compared to the other console community which has had the game for a while and knows exactly how everything works.
AC: Beyond consoles, are there any plans for launching a mobile version of Path of Exile?
CW: That’s something we don’t have a lot of experience in, and so we don’t really have many resources to throw in that direction at the moment. Of course, we want Path of Exile on as many platforms as possible eventually, but we also want to make sure to stick to what we’re good at. It was relatively easy to branch out from PC to console, because it’s still a powerful gaming device, so the game can run as-is.
We branched out onto console platforms because it was both easy and also tempting to do so. The performance gains that were received from doing that, for eg. support for DX11, which is necessary for Xbox, immediately paid off on the PC versions. We felt it worthwhile to invest resources in those console ports.

AC: Path of Exile inevitably draws comparisons to the Diablo franchise. What are your feelings about this?
CW: Path of Exile is a game that is heavily influenced by other action-RPGs, and you can’t talk about other ARPGs without mentioning Diablo. It’s flattering that comparisons are made, being mentioned in the same sentence or article as a great game like Diablo, for example, is very flattering. It’s really cool to have gone from a garage with three random kids to a studio which has made a game people compare in that way to such a great game.
Of course, there are differences between the games. We have a very hard-core slant, and people often call our game Path of Excel. That’s not something other studios could really afford to do, considering that they’d probably make more money targeting a mainstream audience.
AC: You are probably aware of the prankster who redirected the www.playdiablo4.com URL to Path of Exile's page. What are your thoughts on this?
CW: It’s not legal for them to do so, and that’s a case of trademark infringement. I mean, it’s funny, we laughed at it a little internally, but Blizzard’s lawyers soon contacted him and made him change it, which was kind of to be expected, and he probably shouldn’t have done it.
It’s cute that the community does that because they are passionate about our game, but it’s not so good to register domains that are using someone else’s trademark. It’s also flattering that people care to that degree. I think a lot of people got carried away with getting angry on the internet side of this whole debacle.
At the end of the day, Blizzard is making a game for people to play and they’re probably making other games in the background they aren’t ready to talk about yet. It’s disappointing for players to be angry about being given more games to play. Especially when whatever they are waiting for is probably also being developed. I don’t have any information about that, but from my point of view in the industry, I suspect those players will probably end up very happy with what’s eventually produced for them.
AC: What are some of your own experiences with angry Path of Exile players?
CW: Players are passionate and get angry about things on a daily basis. It’s often happy with Path of Exile, but sometimes they don’t like the decisions we make. Those are things we have to learn from and try to do better in the future.
It’s just a matter of allocating time to listen to the players' feedback and to act on it. It pays off of course because then players get to see their feedback directly represented in the game and we know that we’re not steering too far in the wrong direction. Most of our development cycles are 13 weeks or so, that helps us know that we aren’t spending multiple years on something that the players they don’t actually want.
AC: What is developing a game alongside a strong community like for your team?
CW: We play the game a lot, and know a lot of people who play the game, so a lot of the feedback comes from just experiencing it. That’s one of the advantages of being gamers ourselves. We don’t have to say "I know nothing, help! Who’s going to tell me about my game?" Instead, we can play the game, we can talk to people as we play it, see what they say live in the community and chat in-game as it’s happening.
Of course, we read the forums and Reddit and so on, but a lot of what we fix comes from our own experiences.

AC: What is your perspective on the more casual Path of Exile players?
CW: A number of our developers who don’t have time to play at a core level are still playing casually, and that means that such players are also represented in our office. For example, I personally, would get up to the high 80s in a hardcore league but not reach the 90s. I haven't killed The Shaper, I haven't managed to get deep into Red maps on the live server. That’s a casual player by the definitions of our community, so I make sure that casual players like that are represented in any decisions going forward.
AC: Have you noted any significant differences between your Western and Chinese players?
CW: It’s been pretty similar, we’ve honestly found that gamers are gamers, especially Path of Exile gamers. Because there are hardcore people who want a very replayable complex RPG in any country, it’s just a matter of tapping into them as a market.
We found that the profile of the Chinese Path of Exile gamer is relatively similar to that of a Western Path of Exile gamer. There are new players who struggle to learn the fine points of the game, and there are pros that are incredibly good at the content. The same is true for both regions. It also monetizes similarly regardless of which region it is being sold in.
AC: What did the Chinese player base look like before Grinding Gear joined Tencent?
CW: There were plenty of people who played from China, that could read English, were familiar with the genre, and have played Path of Exile on our servers prior to the Chinese launch. It was very useful having them around because when we launched in China they could help Chinese players understand how to play and write guides for them, how to value items and that kind of thing.
AC: What were your experiences with adjusting content for the Chinese market?
CW: Tencent has helped us with recommendations on what content changes should be made to localize and cultural the game for that audience. Because they are the most experienced publisher in the region, they have good expertise on what works well with their players, and what changes are necessary to be able to launch the game legally in the country. That’s been incredibly helpful because it meant we can just do as we were advised by our publisher and not have to try to work it all out for ourselves.
AC: Were there any specific changes necessary that caught you off guard?
CW: I don’t think there was anything surprising honestly, as we did a lot of research beforehand. A lot of what you read online is correct about the various rules for different content. I mean, of course, it took a lot of work to adapt, because Path of Exile is an especially gory game, so there’s quite a lot of stuff to make appropriate.
One goal we had was not to tone down the goriness of the game for future content, because obviously, the cheap way of developing in the future would be to make content that isn’t censorable since that way saves a lot of money and time required to make a special “China version”.
We are very much intending to keep the game dark, gritty and gory, and to put the effort in to then make an appropriate version for China alongside it so that we can retain our atmosphere.
It’s also very unlikely that we could sell some of our cosmetics without modification. If we wanted to sell a gory type of firework, we would have to re-theme it around something appropriate.

AC: What does the future for Path of Exile's monetization methods look like?
CW: We’re trying very hard not to introduce anything that has any actual power impact on gameplay. One could argue that the stash tabs we sell provide a slight convenience in terms of more long-term storage, but we’re trying very hard not to push that boundary in a way that damages the game. We have a lot more cool cosmetic stuff lined up over the years, we’re just getting into selling hideout tilesets, so people can get really good at customizing where their character hangs out. We’re basically expecting more of the same in the future.
AC: Are there any plans for Grinding Gear Games to work on projects beyond Path of Exile?
CW: At the moment we are working 100% on Path of Exile. I’d love to create some new IP in the future, but realistically we already have a lot of work to do with getting our development cycle to the point where we’re making content to the pace we want to. Any new project would be quite far in the future.
AC: Are there any game genres other than ARPGs that you would be interested in developing?
CW: That’s a tough question. I strongly believe that we do ARPGs well, and that’s the area of expertise we have, it’s the games that we play, it’s the games that we talk about, and we don’t have as much cultural expertise with other game genres at our studio. So honestly, I can only imagine us working on ARPG titles in the foreseeable future.
I think that if we made a real-time strategy game, it would probably be a bad one. We’ve discussed bits and pieces of ideas, but they’re always just fantasisations about random ideas we have for stuff. We never got seriously talking about making something that isn’t Path of Exile.
Everything that we do on something that isn’t Path of Exile, would possibly draw attention away from Path of Exile during a period where we are growing at an unprecedented rate. For example, our player numbers for the launch of Betrayal were the highest we’ve ever had, even though the game has been out for six years. That is not a time for us to start becoming distracted by other projects. We want to make sure our attention is on Path of Exile and that we do the best we can while it’s as hot as possible.
AC: What do you feel could be the most significant events for Path of Exile in 2019?
CW: In November 2019 we have ExileCon, which is an event in Auckland where we’ll be announcing several products. We will be announcing the 3.9.0 expansion, which is the December expansion for 2019 (a regular-sized one).
We then also have the massive 4.0.0. mega-expansion which is coming out in 2020 and we’ll be letting players see some early bits and pieces of that, and hopefully allow for a chance to play it at the event.

AC: What would be some general expectations for 2019?
CW: I’d love to have grown from this point, but that, of course, depends on a number of factors. I expect that our record player numbers right now are at least partly due to the recent influx of new players we have had.
Next year we're hoping for modest expansion-on-expansion growth in-line with what we normally see (5-10% per release).
AC: If you had to identify the biggest challenge for Grinding Gear Games in 2019, what would that be?
CW: I think our biggest challenge is getting our development cycle so that we can develop for high-quality expansions for the next year while also making good headway on the big 4.0.0 expansion that’s due the year after.

Yesterday, official Runescape site claimed that the game will feature Celebration Lamps and New Plague Doctor set as the special Christmas gifts to all players. There will be something more than nostalgia and classical pieces in these gifts. Here are the quotes of the original announcements:
It’s time to celebrate the New Year as Celebration Lamps return to Treasure Hunter, giving XP across all your available skills!
From 00:00 UTC on December 27th until 23:59 UTC on January 1st, 2019, you can use Celebration Lamps to get XP in a skill of your choice, and a smaller amount in all other skills that you have access to.
If you do not want to earn Combat XP, worry not - you can right-click the ‘Inspect’ option and follow the prompts to opt out of it.
Once you’ve used a number of Celebration Lamps, the XP you receive from them will begin to increase in +2% increments, up to a maximum of +10%. The more you use, the more XP you’ll get!
We’ve also once again brought back the global 10% XP buff for the duration of Celebration Lamps – giving you some truly awesome gains potential entering the New Year!
Do you know why the classical Plague Doctor uniform has that long-beaked mask? It’s so the doctors could fill it with herbs and spices to hide the smell of all pus-filled groin buboes and fetid corpses! Oh sorry, you weren’t eating, were you?
Now you too can get in on the bacterial pandemic action with our new Plague Doctor set, which is available through a new Task Card! Kicking off on October 25th (00:00) and running until October 29th (23:59), there will be 16 tasks to complete, with four levels of prestige and brand new tasks.
Your reward for your efforts will be the assorted parts of the new Plague Doctor outfit. These include staff and syringe, along with rest, walk and teleport animations. We’ve put a lot of thought into the names of these items, too, which draw upon the somewhat grubby history of Plague Doctors throughout the ages.
Also, note that stickers can be won on Treasure Hunter (and obtained from the Plague Doctor himself) that allow you to skip tasks. Any stickers won after completion will instead function as Prismatic Stars.

Day 5 of Fortnite's '14 Days Of Fortnite' event is upon us as we barrel ever closer to Christmas Day.
Today, not only is there a new challenge and a very cool new reward, but Epic Games has also added Presents to the game, which you can open to find powerful weapons.
This morning's newly revealed fifth challenge is aerial:
This is actually a pretty clever challenge. After all: On the fifth day of Fortnite, my true love gave to me...five golden rings . . . .
It's also clear now that each day will see the number of things you need to do to complete that day's challenge increase. First we had to play just one Creative match; next, we had to visit two giant candy canes; then play three matches with friends; then throw four snowballs; and now, fly through five golden rings.
Tomorrow it will be six of something---likely Goose eggs---and on Christmas, presumably, seven. By the time the fourteenth and final challenge lands, we'll need to do 14 or something.
In any case, once you've flown through five rings, you'll be rewarded with a slick new holiday Back Bling, the Combat Wreath:
I still think Epic should have called it the Tactical Wreath, but oh well. It's still a Christmas wreath Back Bling replete with combat machete, so that's pretty sweet.
In any case, new Golden Rings have shown up across the map. You can find them mostly above and below things like natural arches, bridges, and towers. Here's a full map of every Golden Ring location:
Simply fly through these rings with an X-4 Stormwing Plane and once you've gone through 5 you'll get the reward. That's simple enough, and a nice way for everyone---free and Battle Pass owners alike---to get a new bit of gear.
I'm definitely curious to see what Epic has in store for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There's supposed to be something extra special for Christmas itself, so stay tuned. We'll be resisting the urge to sleep in all throughout the 14 Days Of Fortnite event.
In any case, happy holidays and a merry Christmas to you all! May you enjoy your time playing Fortnite with your loved ones (and rivals). Cheers!

Dear Maplers,
I’d like to relay some humble gratitude from our team to all of you. The holidays are right around the corner and it’s been an awesome journey this year for all of us. We have you to thank for it!
We hope you are enjoying the gift package we sent! As we reviewed the feedback from the community, we have seen that some players misunderstood what items were part of the package. It was one box that included everything mentioned underneath. Because it was a mega-sized bundle, I tried to describe it better by sectioning off what type of items were included to make it easier to parse but it seems like that added to your confusion. We will be more careful with this for any gifts in the future.
I’d like to make it clear that the 2018 Thank-you Package isn’t intended to be part of the improvements we are planning for the game. Our main focus is still on addressing the random aspects of progression combined with the content cap by ensuring that players are always making progress when they invest time into the game over the course of the 2019 updates. As it currently stands:
This has been a popular discussion point among Maplers in the community since Official Launch, and we've mentioned in previous blogs how many bots have been banned, but we have never really discussed in detail exactly how we do this. Unfortunately, we never will. We can't disclose specific details about the methods we utilize as Meso farmers can potentially use this information to their benefit and directly combat our tactics.
Keep in mind that we generally look into a lot of different aspects of the game to battle botters, including but not limited to:
For example, we just rolled out a new detection system that multiple teams have been working on that alone has successfully blocked over 9,000 Meso farmer accounts in just one day. While new methods, rules, and systems to combat Meso farmers are created daily, we aren't rushing to push these additions live either. We focus a lot of our time on manually reviewing individual cases to ensure that each of our new rules, patterns, and systems don't cause any false bans.
There are popular suggestions from the community that we are very much aware of, such as CAPTCHA systems for regular gameplay or dungeons. Keep in mind we do weigh these suggestions based on how effective they could possibly be and how reasonable it is to actually implement such ideas. Some ideas may seem great on paper, but when it comes down to the actual design and implementation of these ideas, it's not necessarily a walk in the park. Don't let this discourage you as we're always open to suggestions, so please keep them coming!
Finally, we've been monitoring trading logs since Official Launch and while we've taken some actions to obvious Meso farmer accounts, we will be ramping up to perform more bans based on suspicious trading starting in January. This does mean we are taking increased action against RMT Meso buyers, so we sincerely ask that you do not buy Mesos from illegal Meso selling websites.
Do the right thing. Don't make Joddy cry!
Happy holidays! This will be our last blog for this year. Please stay tuned for 2019 news in January, and see you in-game!

Lots of people responsible for some of the most recognizable dances are mad at Epic Games. Why? The company has been stealing. There are quite a few games out there, primarily multiplayer affairs, where you can get emotes that make your characters perform a certain action. Fortnite is known for its dances, which are sold for V-Bucks people get with real money. The problem is, Epic Games is profiting off of others’ work and not giving the proper credit.
How did this all get started? Well, it was when Terrence “2 Milly” Ferguson filed a lawsuit against Epic Games. His Milly Rock dance was stolen and used in Fortnite as the Swipe dance. 2 Milly has filed for a copyright for the dance, as the choreographer and creator of it. No consent was given. Epic just took it, animated it, popped it in the game and started profiting off of it. No acknowledgment was given to 2 Milly. It was given a different name. But we all know what it is and where it is from. Something an artist, someone who makes a living off of their creativity, has been taken and profited off of. He filed a lawsuit, rightfully so.
In 2 Milly’s December 6, 2018 filing, he named other dances Epic Games had stolen and used in Fortnite. One of them was a dance that appeared in a popular TV show and was created by Alfonso “Carlton” Ribeiro. This led to Ribeiro suing. Which, again, makes sense. The dance appearing in Fortnite is called Fresh. It is identical to the Carlton dance appearing in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He often performed it to “It’s Not Unusual,” by Tom Jones. He even did it when he competed in Dancing with the Stars in 2014. He created this dance. It is iconic and unmistakable. He is even filing copyright. He does deserve credit for it.
Right now, we are in the bandwagon phase. While 2 Milly and the Ribeiro lawsuits might have merit, what is going on with Russell “Backpack Kid” Horning could be a bit trickier. He became a viral sensation for his Flossing dance. Which is, to be frank, not as complex as 2 Milly or Ribeiro’s dances. That might be a bit more difficult to prove as something that could be deserving of the money. But the real issue with his suit is prior statements Horning has made.
Epic Games has had Horning appear at Fortnite events. At the June 2018 E3 Pro-Am, he participated in a charitable match and won $30,000 for charity. When questioned by TMZ, he said he “could care less” about getting paid for the Floss dance emote, as it was a “huge honor” for it to be included. His appearing at events condoning the dance and being shown on the record stating that he didn’t want money for Flossing is not going to bode well for him.
It is tempting to call such lawsuits silly or frivolous. In fact, that is exactly what Epic Games would want. By making this seem like nonsense, it taints public perception and makes it easier to question if 2 Milly, Ribeiro, and Horning have been wronged. But these situations are much more complex. We have scenarios where a company is making money off of the creations of others and not providing compensation or proper credit. That needs to be fixed.
